We focus on products that match the site’s niche and offer value, relevance, and availability. Our team reviews each listing for brand fit, price competitiveness, and real-world usefulness before featuring it.

How We Actually Test

Most “best of” lists never touch the product. We do — at least the units we can get our hands on. Testing and reviews are led by Marcus Reed, founder of Battery Depot. For the portable power stations, solar gear, and batteries we feature, here’s the process:

1. Capacity check. We run the unit down with a DC electronic load at a realistic draw (roughly 80–100W — a small fridge plus lights) and record the actual watt-hours delivered versus the marketed figure.
2. Real-world runtime. We power an actual load — a fridge, a laptop, a router — and time it, then note the gap between the lab spec and what happens on a hot afternoon.
3. Recharge. We measure wall-plug and, where relevant, solar input, and record how long it takes to reach roughly 80%.
4. Longevity. On a sample unit we run a few dozen charge/discharge cycles, watching for capacity fade and excessive heat.
5. Build & safety. We check the casing, port layout, fan noise, and look for recognized certifications (UL, CE, UN38.3).

How we score

Every pick is rated on a simple rubric so recommendations stay consistent: capacity accuracy (25%), real-world runtime versus the claim (25%), recharge speed (15%), build & safety (20%), and value for money (15%). Affiliate commission is never one of the inputs.

What we won’t do

• Accept payment to place or rank a product — placement is never for sale.
• Let a higher commission change a pick. If a cheaper, better unit exists, it wins.
• Publish a “review” we haven’t actually tested or verified.
• Leave stale pricing or claims up. We revisit and update posts, and date them.

We’re independent and reader-supported, not a lab. Where we can’t physically test a unit, we say so and rely on manufacturer specs, certified test data, and owner reports — never on the marketing line alone.
